Artist's Statement

I probe a psychological dimension in my art. I do not preconceive my pieces, but attempt to trust my unconscious and let the work unfold. The paintings develop out of random marks, made with charcoal on paper, that slowly suggest an idea or emotion which I then elaborate with color using acrylic paints. Sometimes I tear a painting into fragments which I then arrange to create a collage with new subject matter. Overall, the work is concerned with the emergence of the true self, and the anguish and exhilaration which accompany the struggle to confront distressing situations, past and present, and thus grow and be free. This work is meaningful and healing for me and, I hope, for others who contemplate it.
